Images of the dodo bird thought to have been drawn from life.

Much of the artwork that has come to define the dodo as we generally think of it today – a fat, clumsy, awkward bird with a bulbous bill – is thought by experts to have derived not from living dodos, but from stuffed specimens. Many artists simply copied the work of those before them. Only a few pieces of artwork exist that are thought to have been drawn from direct observation. Of these, the work of Mansur, Hoefnagel and Saftleven stand out.
